This Major Grey’s Anatomy Character Return Fixes 2 Season 20 Problems

The return of a fan-favorite character who stayed on for 10 seasons at Grey Sloan Memorial can finally solve 2 major Grey’s Anatomy season 20 issues.

One major Grey’s Anatomy character returning for season 20 can mean great things for the ABC medical drama, fixing two specific problems season 20 might bring. The early February confirmation of two new characters joining the show and two well-known characters returning for Grey’s Anatomy season 20 can potentially make viewers more interested in the upcoming season. This could matter even more considering the significance of one of the characters returning, who wasn’t a central one from Grey’s Anatomy season 1 but still was a beloved doctor of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital for ten seasons.

Grey’s Anatomy season 19 saw Ellen Pompeo’s reduced role as Meredith stick for season 20, and with Kelly McCreary’s exit as Maggie, audiences saw two of the medical drama’s biggest characters disappear from the show in a span of a couple of episodes. While the two returned for the Grey’s Anatomy season 19 finale and Pompeo will temporarily reprise her role in Grey’s Anatomy season 20, two major characters will still be absent from Grey Sloan Memorial’s daily life. This makes the return of similarly big characters all the more meaningful.

Arizona’s Return Can Connect Grey’s Anatomy’s Old Guard To The New

Although Grey’s Anatomy season 20 has plenty of doctors who have been many years at the center of the show, only Richard and Miranda have effectively stayed for the complete run without leaving. While Owen has been in Grey’s Anatomy since season 5 and Teddy joined him on and off since season 6, many of the interns and residents have seen more doctors leave than join Grey Sloan and stay consistently for many seasons. Even Nick Marsh and Winston Ndugu, crucial mentors of Grey Sloan Memorial’s residents, have only been there for two or three seasons maximum.

Jessica Capshaw returning to guest star as Dr. Arizona Robbins in Grey’s Anatomy season 20 can finally act as a connection between the old guard and their stories in Grey’s Anatomy and the newest interns. With residents such as Taryn Helm and Levi Schmitt having already worked for Arizona, having her return even temporarily could offer them a semblance of normalcy amid many changes, both in their lives as residents and among the doctors they consider their mentors. Arizona’s return could also provide the new interns with a link to the old Grey’s Anatomy besides Richard and Miranda.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Can Finally Do Justice To Arizona’s Exit Story

However, Arizona’s return can also do justice to her character exit in Grey’s Anatomy season 14, which was motivated by a perfect reason given that it was for her family, but it also left a few storylines ending abruptly and inorganically. Moving to New York so that Sofia could be happy living close to both her mothers was one of the happiest reasons to leave, especially as many central characters left by dying. Still, it hinted that Arizona was happy about messaging with Callie, leaving a door open for their romance despite all the pain Callie put Arizona through.

Arizona’s return in Grey’s Anatomy season 20 can finally update audiences about her life in New York, tying up the loose ends that her abrupt exit left open. In addition, an update could also provide more insight into her new life with Callie and Sofia, and even a new love story if her and Callie’s history felt too much to be revisited. Depending on how many episodes Capshaw is set to guest star as Arizona, Grey’s Anatomy season 20 could finally give Arizona the proper ending that season 14 denied her.

Grey’s Anatomy season 20 will premiere on Thursday, March 14 at 9 PM ET on ABC.
